What is a Goodyear Welt?

Unlike cheaper, glued-together mass-market shoes, a Goodyear welted boot features a strip of leather (the 'welt') stitched to the upper and the insole. This welt then provides the anchor point for the outsole to be stitched on. This two-stage stitching process creates a nearly impenetrable barrier against water and debris.
